DAY 1: COLOMBO - KURUNAGELA

On the way stop for a delicious Tambili (King Coconut) to quench your thirst and rehydrate after a long flight. Arrive in time to experience an array of home cooked curries of the local area which is largely Christian. All ingredients are freshly picked from the estates gardens, including a lot of the spices used.Retire to your balcony with a good book and a cup of Ceylon tea.

DAY 2: KANDY

Arrive into the last stronghold of Sinhala Kings & UN World Heritage Site – the Hill Country capital of Kandy. Explore the city’s Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Wander around the lake and the streets of Kandy getting a feel for this wonderful city. This evening you will enjoy The Kandy House’s Kandyan Curries that are recipes handed down family to family over hundred of years. Kandyan cuisine is considered the most superior of island food by the Kandyans themselves! The food has a distinct flavor and is rich, cooked in coconut milk and often fried in coconut oil. It typifies Sri Lankan Sinhalese cuisine.

DAY 3: KANDY

Today you will do a full day cooking course on Kandyan Village cuisine hosted by Sri Lanka’s leading artist Ena De Silva at the Aluwihare Kitchens and The Matale Heritage Centre. By the end of the day you will have experienced over 25 Kandyan curries. Suggest some hard earned cocktails down by the pool overlooking the paddy fields!

DAY 4: DICKOYA

DAY 5: DICKOYA

Spend the morning seeing how Ceylon tea is made and learn the art of becoming a discerning tea taster with the Master himself, Andrew Taylor – a descendent of James Taylor who planted the first tea seed in Sri Lanka in 1867.Visit the nearby Warleigh Church built in 1878 by early British planters. It is situated in one of the most stunning locations.

DAY 6: DICKOYA - NUWARA ELIYA - GALAPITA

Rug up as you are now in cooler climbs – 6,500ft. A quick stop in Nuwara Eliya and no better way to introduce yourself to what was labeled “Little England” than to have a cup of tea on the verandah of the British Colonial Hill Club built in 1876 – it is a huge part of Sri Lanka’s history. Arrive at Galapita where you will stay in wonderful mud huts and fall asleep to the sound of the river. It’s a truly magical location and experience. We just love their delicious organic vegetable curries and string hoppers. Only vegetarian food is served all made from their home grown veges. It is seriously good.

DAY 7: GALAPITA

Enjoy a traditional Sri Lanka breakfast! There is nothing quite like it. Spend the morning swinging in a hammock listening to the sound of the river with a good book or for the more active go gem panning in Galapita’s river.  The river is filled with semi precious stones such as garnets and quartz. Many a guest has departed with some superb stones and headed straight to the jewelers to have them cut and polished. Try your luck! More of those delicious organic vegetable curries.

DAY 8: GALAPITA - KATARAGAMA - TANGALLE

Stop in Katagarama – Sri Lanka’s holiest city and home to thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims in August each year. Stop off in Rekawa and see the Turtle Hatchery and conservation centre.

DAY 9: TANGALLE

Head down to the beach and help the local fisherman pull in their daily catch! The chef at Kadju will purchase your dinner for you from the local fisherman. Its now time to learn about traditional Sri Lankan village cuisine. Most Sri Lankans have an Aunty from a village whom they wax lyrical about how delicious her curries are that are cooked in clay pots over a cinnamon wood fuelled fire resulting in authentic taste and far superior to those cooked on conventional gas or electric cookers. Well now it is your turn to have an Aunty with whom you can wax lyrical about and also learn a thing or two from. Aunty Minerva is a very charismatic English teacher from the local village who will give you a crash cooking course on traditional Sri Lankan village cuisine and the inside on her spicy secrets!

DAY 10: TANGALLE - GALLE

We will stop in Matara at a local bakery to taste some of Sri Lanka’s delicious shorts eats from fish buns to vegetable rolls and uludu wade’s.Kahanda Kanda (KK) is an award winning boutique hotel that will only leave you wanting more. It is definitely one of our favourite hidden treasures of Sri Lanka and the food is superb - Asian fusion cuisine.In the afternoon wander on the ramparts and through the streets of the UN World Heritage Site – Galle Fort. Considered one of the best examples of a living fortified city built by Europeans in South and South East Asia.There is so much to discover and it is best to do it on foot. Use our map as well as our shopping & eating guide to discover the best of this Fort. Your guide will also assist you.Tonight you will be treated to one of KK’s amazing dinners in a secret location. You will feel like royalty!

DAY 11: GALLE

The chefs at KK will take you on a trip to the local fruit, vegetable and fish markets where you will gain an understanding into the large variety of seasonal produce available. You will also purchase ingredients for your Thai cooking classes. You will have a 3 hour Thai cooking class with Chefs Fauz & Dilip who trained in Thailand and at the end of the class you will enjoy the fruits of your labour. This evening you will head into Galle Fort and have a wonderful Rice & Curry served with a colonial accent in this grand dining room.

DAY 12: GALLE - COLOMBO

Any extra shopping it’s your last chance to stop in Galle Fort! We will stop off and enjoy some of Sri Lanka’s most delicious Roti’s – The House of Roti in Hikkaduwa is the perfect street side stall for a mid morning snack. A quick stop in Kalutara to stock up on one of our favourite tropical fruits – Mangsteens. The season is April to September. For lunch we will head to a local Jaffna Kade (café) where we will enjoy a truly authentic and local experience eating some of the islands best chilli crab and Jaffna omelets – all served on a banana leaf. Sunset Cocktails on the checker board of the Galle Face Hotel - Asia’s oldest hotel located on the Indian Ocean in the centre of Colombo.  An absolute must. Be there by 5.45pm.Make sure you have some hot devilled Cashew nuts. This evening we will head to Sri Lanka’s oldest Muslim Cafés for some mouth watering Chicken Masala and super delicious Buryani. This café has a colourful history and is again a truly local experience.

DAY 13: COLOMBO - NEGOMBO - COLOMBO

Breakfasts at the Galle Face are my favourite in Sri Lanka. The freshly made egg hoppers with Seni Sambal & Pol Sambal are to die for. Don’t stop at one! Its now time to head to the famous Negombo Fish market where it all happens. Your host will be Sri Lanka’s leading chef and restaurateur Darshan Munidasa. Darshan is half Sri Lankan and half Japanese and is the most passionate and knowledgeable chef on all things FISH and seafood related. He will take you around the market where you will purchase the freshest of seafood and return to his Japanese restaurant for lunch only to have it cooked for you. Darshan will share with you his passion and knowledge which will leave with you so much inspiration you will want to get home and start cooking yourself. Time for your last sunset cocktail on the checker board of the Galle Face Hotel. Superb dinner at Sri Lanka’s most stylish restaurant Gallery Café – once the office of the world renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa.

DAY 14: COLOMBO

Take in the sites of Colombo and spent a few hours shopping for branded goods.
