ITINERARY

Day 1 > CHIANG MAI – BAN TAWAI - SANPATONG (-/L/D)

Leaving the hotel in the morning, we cycle down narrow lanes and alleyways. We follow the Ping River south and visit a Chinese temple on the outskirts of the city. The Chinese temple is well worth a visit for its somewhat quirky architecture. The next stop is at a former leper colony, founded originally by the missionaries, now a rehabilitation center. Riders will find here a heaven of peace and tranquility in woodland surroundings. We rejoin the Ping River and follow it south to the village of Ban Tawai, famous for woodcarving artisans. There is time to look around while lunch is prepared at a local restaurant.

A little further on we visit a family run business making traditional Thai dolls for the last 50 years. The proud owner has on display a comprehensive collection of dolls and puppets from around the world. Our overnight accommodation is in a resort converted from tobacco barns, tastefully and luxuriously decorated. Situated in quiet and peaceful surroundings with a swimming pool.

Cycling distance about 55 kilometres.

Day 2 > SANPATONG – LAMPHUN - CHIANG MAI (B/L/-)

In the first village, we cycle through today we discover chedis and ruins, some of which are seven centuries old. The journey continues on back roads through ever changing scenery till we reach Lampoon. We visit Wat Phrathat Haripunchai, one of the most revered temples in Northern Thailand. Leaving Lampoon behind, we cycle alongside canals and pass orchards and farmers fields, through little villages till we meet the Ping River and follow it upstream. A visit to the ancient ruins of the former site of Chiang Mai rounds off the day. With pleasure you will look back and remember the highlights of this cycling adventure.

Cycling distance about 55 kilometres.
