Daily departure from Khon Kaen

The Lao Phuan village of Baan Chiang is a site of major interest 50 kms east of Udon Thani. A National Museum (open daily 09:00-17:00) and an excavation site exhibit at Wat Phu Si Nai details life in the area 2000-4000 years ago. You continue directly to Nong Khai from Ban Chiang via a rural route to Nong Han and further passing Pen, a district town. On the route you may also visit the picturesque silk weaving village of Ban Na Kha.

DAY 2 > NONG KHAI – LOEI (245 KMS)

From Nong Khai the route follows the Mekong valley upstream through increasingly scenic landscapes, before turning south in direction of the provincial capital of Loei. The route takes you to Phu Phrabat, a historical Park. We recommend a visit to this beautiful site for a relaxing 90 Minutes walk around the Park. Return back to the Mekong River at Sang Khon for picturesque drive east to Chiang Khan. From Chiang Khan head further south to Loei, the provincial market center serving the surrounding uplands.

DAY 3 > LOEI – DAN SAI (81 KMS)

From Loei the route climbs a pass before slowly descending into a scenic upland valley well-known for its cold temperatures and the Phu Rue National Park. After entering the park you can drive to a carpark within a one-kilometer walk of the most accessible of the protected plateau wildernesses in this region. Continue to the Chateau de Loei – Thailand’s premier winery where you may visit the vineyard. Follow the route westwards to Dan Sai, which is famous for the Phitakon Festival held sometime in June according to a schedule determinate by the officiating Shaman.

DAY 4 > DAN SAI – PHITSANULOK  (142 KMS)

We recommend the route climbing from Dan Sai over a north-south ridge before going to Nakhon Thai which then descends down towards Phitsanulok passing several points where the Khek River tumbles over picturesque falls and rapids. Pitsanulok is an important commercial center on the Nan River. We recommend a visit to the Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Thailand’s second most revered pilgrimage site followed by a relaxing Thai meal on one of the floating restaurants on the Nan River.

DAY 5 > PHITSANULOK – KHAO KHO (LOMSAK) (128 KMS)

From Pitsanulok the route takes you along the Khek Valley to the Khao Lang Non Son Range, an area that was once a communist stronghold. Alternative routes north and south explore this terrain where you may explore either the scenic Kaeng Sopha falls in the Thung Slaeng Luang National Park or you may take the alternative route to Khao Kho and Phetchaboon which traverses a highland plateau famous for battles between the Thai government forces and the CPT. Sights include a narrow road that climbs to a rudimentary weapons museum and to a war memorial from where you can enjoy a panoramic view. Your today’s journey ends in Khao Kho, a substantial district center rivaling the provincial capital of Phetchaboon.

DAY 6 > KHAO KHO (LOMSAK) – KHON KAEN  (196 KMS)

Your last day’s trip takes you to Khon Kaen following a pretty route over a watershed straddled by the Nam Nao National Park. When you get to Khon Kaen you return your car to the BUDGET Car Rental Station before 18:30hrs.
